As AI becomes embedded within everyday workflows, organisations are encountering a new set of operational and professional risks. These have the potential to create significant commercial, reputational, and legal impacts.
The rate at which AI is being adopted is outpacing the development of the skills, controls, and expectations required to use it safely. As AI tools become more powerful, and our reliance on them grows, it gets more difficult to spot errors, to understand how they are being used, and to prevent sensitive company information from going public.
AI systems can produce convincing but incorrect information, incomplete analysis, or fabricated references. As AI becomes embedded within everyday workflows, there is increased risk that inaccurate or misleading content is incorporated into professional outputs without sufficient scrutiny. Because AI-generated material is often highly plausible, and becoming more convincing over time, errors may not be immediately obvious and can pass through quality assurance processes unnoticed.
This creates potential commercial risk through flawed analysis or decision-making, reputational risk where incorrect information reaches clients or external stakeholders, and legal or regulatory risk where outputs fail to meet required standards of accuracy, disclosure, or professional diligence.
Frequent reliance on AI-generated outputs without sufficient scrutiny can weaken independent judgement and problem-solving capability, particularly among early-career professionals still developing core skills. When AI is used without actively engaging in the underlying reasoning, opportunities to practise analytical thinking and challenge assumptions may be reduced. Over time, this can contribute to a widening skills gap, limiting confidence in critically evaluating outputs and applying appropriate due diligence.
AI use is not always visible within organisations, with limited disclosure reducing transparency around where and how AI is influencing work outputs. When individuals do not clearly acknowledge their use of AI, accountability for the accuracy and quality of outputs can become less clear. This can make it more difficult to apply appropriate oversight, increasing the risk of inconsistent standards, reduced transparency, and errors going unidentified within AI-assisted work.
Increased use of publicly available AI tools raises the possibility that commercially sensitive information is shared outside approved environments. This may include client data, intellectual property, commercially sensitive analysis, or internal strategy information.
